Interest Check: Programming Contest

Seeing as we have so many developers these days, I've been toying with the idea of offering a programming contest on PDA. I'd choose a problem, such as writing an AI for a well-known game of very simple rules, for which the success of player AIs can be objectively measured against one another. I was kicking this idea around earlier this year and let it fall by the wayside. (Full disclosure: it may fall by the wayside again.) The way I'd structure it would probably be this: 1. Your work must be original. You're allowed to use support libraries, provided that the code you use is freely and legally available on-line (eg. open source licenses or public domain). However, you can't use someone else's AI. 2. You must work alone. 3. The contest would be posted for a while (say, 2 weeks). The prize would probably be a programming text, or something else worthwhile. 4. The winner would send in their code to be posted. Does this sound interesting to people?

Dahelp Downtime

Update: The problem is now fixed, and DAH is now functioning just fine. If you took my advice earlier and added a hosts file entry, please remove that line now. As many people have noticed, our sister site DAHelp is down, as discussed in this thread. Here are the highlights: The domain registration for dahelp.com has expired. For those of you who don't know what that means, essentially, domain names (like "planetda.net" or "dahelp.com") are looked up like names in a phone book through a service called DNS. By performing a DNS lookup, you can turn a human-readable domain name (like "dahelp.com") into an IP address (like 64.246.50.89) that it can use to call up the server. This service is not free. Although sites are said to own domain names, that's not really true -- we rent them. To get a domain name, you have to pay a fee to maintain ownership, usually assessed yearly. If you stop paying, then the domain expires and you lose it. dahelp.com expired yesterday, and so it's essentially been repossessed by the registrar. The site owner has 75 days from the date of expiration to pay up before the domain is released for resale to the general public. That does not mean that you can't get to DAHelp if you want to. The issue is that your computer can't find DAHelp through DNS, because the DNS entry now points it to GoDaddy's domain parking servers instead of RevolutionHosting's web server. However, you can tell your computer what the IP address is by editing a certain file called the "hosts" file. The hosts file just lets you tell your computer that certain names go to certain IP addresses, so that it can go there without consulting DNS. Please note that I'm giving this information out of goodwill, and offer no warranties if you mess anything up. But rest assured: you will have to be doing something very, very different from what I'm telling you to do here to mess up your computer. This is a very safe procedure. But if it doesn't work, or by some horrible miracle you manage to break something, don't sue me. Time permitting, I'll try to answer occasional questions about if people have them, but obviously, I'm not your tech support, so please understand if I don't reply quickly, or at all. To edit your hosts file, first you'll need to find it, which I'll explain below. Once you do find the hosts file add this on a line by itself at the bottom: CODE 64.246.50.89 www.dahelp.com dahelp.com On Windows 2000, XP, 2003 or Vista, this is located at C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts. Just open it in Notepad, and add in the line at the bottom. On Windows 95, 98 and ME, the hosts file is located at C:\Windows\hosts. Once again, just open it in Notepad, and add in the line at the bottom. On Unix and Unix-like systems, including Mac OS X and Linux, the hosts file is located at /etc/hosts. You will need superuser privileges to edit it. Open a terminal -- Linux users, you ought to know how to do this, but for OS X people, go to Applications->Utilities->Terminal. Type in the following command into the command prompt, EXACTLY as it appears. CODE sudo echo "64.246.50.89 www.dahelp.com dahelp.com" >> /etc/hosts It will ask for your password. Type it in. Once you've edited your hosts file, restart your browser. You should be able to go to DAHelp. Be sure to remove the hosts file entry once all this is straightened out. If the IP address for DAH ever changes, your computer will be stuck going to the old one, because it's still looking at the hosts file entry. Update: It is now straightened out. Do not add a hosts file entry if you have not already done so, and remove the line if you have.
